Signature Campsites across South Carolina State Parks

There are over 3,000 campsites from the mountains to the sea and everywhere in between in South Carolina – but there are many less, well-known, coveted sites with their own nicknames.

Since camping season is upon us, and the warm weather of spring has arrived, we thought we’d share some of these highly-touted sites with you. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to land one someday in the near future!

Dreher Island State Recreation Area – Amen Corner, Sites #57, 37, 7, 9 and T-14

No, it’s not the Masters, but to some it’s much better and much more beautiful. Amen Corner, as it’s affectionately known by the locals refers to campsites #53 and #54 on the peninsula of the island at Dreher Island that stretches out into the waters of Lake Murray. From this point you can see clear across the lake and revel in the late afternoon sunsets.

But those aren't the only prime sites at Dreher Island.  Make sure you check out the highly coveted site #37, due to its size and spaciousness, and site #57 with its spectacular view of the lake.  There's also sites #7 and #9 in the front campground and for you folks that tent camp, site T-14 is spectacular with its location and view of Lake Murray.

Lake Wateree State Recreation Area – The Hospitality Site

The very favorite campsite at Lake Wateree would be none other than campsite #11. Why is this particular site so popular – as with most, it’s all about location, location. This site boasts the nicest beach area on the park, and well, you’ll find all of your neighbors will want to park their boats there too – so, if you’re planning on spending the weekend alone, this wouldn’t be the site for you. But, if you’re into spreading that southern hospitality with your neighbors and meeting new folks for the weekend, then this would be the perfect site for you.

Edisto Beach State Park – Site #24

Want an incredible view of the ocean when you wake up in the morning to watch the sunrise? Then site #24 at Edisto Beach is the place. This site is located next to the beach with an awesome view – and on top of that, it is blessed with shade – something that means a whole lot during a hot South Carolina summer. Although it hasn’t been nicknamed yet, it’s surely the spot you will want to reserve for your next camping trip at Edisto Beach.

Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area – Paradise Point

Although none of the campsites at Hamilton Branch are at a bad location – since all are waterfront – there’s one site that stands out above the rest and has garnered the nickname Paradise Point. It’s none other than site #108 at Hamilton Branch. This particular site is on a long peninsula by its self and has the best sunset view on the park. Put that one on the list of campsites you must reserve.

Oconee State Park – Site #18

Once again, no nickname, but highly coveted nonetheless. When you are up for some mountain camping at Oconee State Park, try site #18. It is located on the lake look and not only has a great view of the lake but also lots of privacy. It’s like you’re alone in the campground. The site has plenty of room for a small RV or is also great for tent campers.

Little Pee Dee State Park – Site #8

At Little Pee Dee, seven’s not lucky; its number eight – site #8 that is. Located on the corner and right on the lakefront, it’s the prime spot at this small park in the South Carolina Sandhills. Make an effort to venture out to Little Pee Dee this spring or summer and see why this site is so special.

Devils Fork State Park – Site #13 and Double Springs #7

It’s all about the view – and what amazing views are to be had on Lake Jocassee at Devils Fork State Park. There are two sites for you to keep in mind here, the first on the mainland, and if you’re not afraid to occupy it, it’s site #13. This rustic walk-in tent site 13 overlooks magnificent Lake Jocassee towards the dam.

You must have a boat to get to the other Devil’s Fork sought after site. It is site #7 in the Double Springs campground across from the main area of the park. This site sits out on a point by itself, so you find yourself surrounded by nature.

Cheraw State Park - The Sunset Site

For a great campsite at Cheraw try #12.  Affectionately called the Sunset Site, site #12 offers a spectacular view of the sunset over Lake Juniper.  You won't want to miss this one on your next camping trip to Cheraw.

Sadlers Creek State Recreation Area - Site #5 and Site #33

For great views of Lake Hartwell at Sadlers Creek, you must try sites #5 and 33.  Both of these offer lakefront camping with beautiful views of Lake Hartwell.  A hidden gem, Sadlers Creek is located in Anderson County, just a short drive from I-85.

Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area - Sites #15, 25, 58, 64 and 74

An awesome campground -- Calhoun Falls has quite a few favorite sites, according to its customers.  Some of the favorites include:  sites 15, 25, 58, 64 and 74, just to name a few. They are all waterfront, spacious and have nice views.

There are many, many more great campsites to be had throughout the SC State Park System, so do not despair if you can’t get your hands on one of these. We just thought we’d mention some of our most sought after in case you’re up for the challenge and the reward that you will receive once you arrive at one of these special places!
